Talat: “Conditions today much more favourable”
The conditions are much more favourable for a solution of the Cyprus Problem, said former T/C leader Mehmet Ali Talat last week, during a press conference right before giving a speech at Neapolis University in Paphos about the economic benefits of a solution.
According to a report by Politis newspaper, Mr. Talat pointed out that the two elements that make a solution more likely are the discovery of natural gas and the economic crisis. He admitted that he wasn’t able to solve the Cyprus Problem with former President Demetris Christofias mainly due to running out of time and added that the negotiations can easily succeed if they continue right from where they left off.
Asked to comment on whether Dervis Eroglu honestly wants a solution, Mr. Talat pointed out that the current T/C leader is bound by the will of Turkich Cypriot public opinion, which, he said, supports reunification. He also added that it’s encouraging that President Anastasiades, a right-wing politician, supports the solution with the support of the left and even the Archbishop’s.
