Akıncı: “No factors against the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot community”

Stating that the agreement reached between the European Union and Turkey in Brussels was positive, President Mustafa Akıncı expressed that there aren’t any factors against the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot community. On the contrary, Akıncı evaluated this situation as positive.

In his written statement, Akıncı evaluated the agreement reached between the European Union and Turkey in Brussels and he stated that he welcomed the agreement launched between Turkey and the EU within the new process in order to measure the tragic migration event until peace is achieved in Syria. Akıncı also expressed his hope that measures to be taken may help the pain being experienced.

Furthermore Akıncı also stated that the agreement which was reached as the result of the consensus, culture in the EU is important in terms of opening the new 33rd chapter during Turkey’s EU full membership negotiations.

Akıncı: “Turkish Cypriots are the main actors of the Cyprus talks”

Pointing out that a situation is out of question where the Turkish Cypriots and its elected leader are beside the point Akıncı said, “Neither Turkey makes such a mistake, nor such a situation adopted by the Turkish Cypriot people. The main actors of the Cyprus talks are the Turkish Cypriots. Of course we will consult with Turkey, but the will belongs to the Turkish Cypriots.”

Speaking at the 2nd Cyprus Economic Forum, President Mustafa Akıncı criticized some news noted in the press recently that “Turkish Cypriots are no longer part of the negotiations” and said that such news is not true. Indicating that progression has been reached on 4 main chapters regarding the negotiations, Akıncı said 2 of the 4 chapters are related to the economy.

Sending a video message to the Summit, the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide in his speech stated that after taking office it was decided to discuss the economic aspect of the solution in Cyprus and added that President Mustafa Akıncı and the Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Anastasiades empowered himself to make contacts with the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Stating that they received unprecedented support from these two institutions, Eide said they have international support which is pleasing. Eide also stated that he is pleased to see the close cooperation between the international organizations and experts in Cyprus.  Furthermore, indicating that the support from the European Commission and the European Central Bank is satisfactory, Eide said that while these organizations are making preparations for the implementation of the EU acquis in the whole island, at the same time they are making studies on the role of the Euro………. 

Prokopakis: “The compensation amount on property is exaggerated”

Indicating that the compensation amount on property is exaggerated and it is pointless to discuss the cost of the solution, Greek lecturer and consultant Yorgos Prokopakis said that huge economic gains will arise from the settlement of the Cyprus problem. Giving an interview to Greek Cypriot daily Alithia and Politis, Prokopakis said that the leaders are obliged to proceed towards a settlement on the Cyprus problem and it is a success that the leaders of the two communities currently have a constructive dialogue.

Stating that in case of a settlement, compensation will be given within the bounds of possibilities, Prokopakis said that the importance given to compensation is blocking the real perspectives arising from the reunification.

According to the news, Prokopakis stated that the Greek Cypriot economy has started to stand on its own feet again, but there are some risks in backstage. Prokopakis also mentioned that the hydrocarbon reserves in South Cyprus’s so-called “Exclusive Economic Zone” is a “golden opportunity” both for new investment opportunities and for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Martyrs of Gaziveren and Çamlıköy commemorated

Martyrs who resisted in Gaziveren and Çamlıköy 52 years ago were commemorated with ceremonies on the 20th March.

Within the framework of the 52nd Anniversary of Gaziveren and Çamlıköy Resistance the first ceremony was organized in front of the Martyrs Monument in Gaziveren and the second one at the Martyrs Emin İzzet Monument in Çamlıköy.
