President Akıncı met with the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz
The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz who paid visits in the island met with President Mustafa Akıncı.
President Mustafa Akıncı stated that the meeting with the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz was very fruitful and he added that the relationship between the European Parliament (EP), which is one of the important institutions of the EU, and the Turkish Cypriots had reached a better position and he mentioned that Turkish Cypriots will take place in the European family in order to share a common future.
Following the meeting, Akıncı made a brief statement to the press. Pointing out that Schulz is a person who supports the Cyprus issue wholeheartedly, Akıncı mentioned that he had given information about the latest stage reached regarding the Cyprus problem and expressed his thanks for the provided support……..
Schulz: “Reunification of Cyprus has become a realistic possibility”
The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz said that the reunification of Cyprus has become a realistic possibility and this historic chance can be grasped.
Stating that the parties should take the right steps towards each other in order to reach a consensus in the negotiations, Schulz noted that the fate of Cypriots should no longer be dependent on the details. Schulz said: “If reunification reaches success, all Cypriots will take advantage from this situation as politically, scientifically and culturally.”
He ended his words by emphasizing that the EU will and should support reunified Cyprus.
Schulz visited the CMP Laboratory
The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, who paid visits in the island, visited the Anthropology Laboratory under the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP). Schulz met with CMP Members and the Committee’s Greek and Turkish Cypriot scientists and obtained information about their works and then he made a short press release.
Stating that he had a unique chance to meet with the CMP Members and representatives, Schulz said that he was impressed by CMP’s efforts and expressed his personal support as well as the critical role played by the European Parliament in ensuring the continuing support financially.
Schulz met with political party leaders and representatives
The President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz met with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political party leaders and representatives in the buffer zone at the Ledra Palace hotel under the auspices of the Embassy of Slovakia in Nicosia.
Addressing the meeting, Schulz, who paid an official visit to Cyprus, said that the EU is living in turbulent and dramatic times noting that the EU was never in its history in such challenged times as is the case today.
As regards the Cyprus issue, he expressed the view that in case of a solution and reunification, this would convey a message of hope throughout Europe.
3rd President Eroğlu: “A new hydrocarbon tender is evidence that the rights of the Turkish Cypriots are continuing to be usurped”
3rd President Derviş Eroğlu said that while the two sides are negotiating reunification, the Greek Cypriot Administration’s decision to open a new tender for hydrocarbon exploration is evidence of their intention to continue to usurp the rights of the Turkish Cypriots and shows one more time that a factual and viable solution is not possible under these circumstances.
Eroğlu called President Akıncı to show the necessary determination to stop the Greek Cypriots and to take steps in order to protect the rights of the Turkish Cypriots.
Hijacked Egyptair aircraft forced to land at Larnaca Airport.
An Egyptair aircraft which departed from Alexandria city of Egypt was hijacked and forced to land at Larnaca Airport. The Airbus A320 plane was carrying 81 passengers from Alexandria to Cairo, and entered Nicosia FIR line by changing the route yesterday at 08:20. Continuing his action after the plane landed for a while, hijacker Egyptian Şerif El Din Mustafa was later taken into custody. The action was terminated “without dead or wounded and no one harmed.”
Greek Cypriot authorities declared that no explosives were found on the hijacker. It was also reported that the person who hijacked the aircraft is not a terrorist, he is just a person who was trying to contact his ex-wife. Furthermore, it was reported that the Egyptian hijacker has a criminal history.
Greatest renewable energy project of North Cyprus at UKÜ
International Cyprus University’s (UKÜ) Photovoltaic Electricity Power Plant project which covers 14.000 square meters has been completed. As well as being the greatest renewable energy project of North Cyprus, it also sets an example in the international arena. The project has been conducted by being installed on 4 different areas of flat roof, inclined roof, land and car park.
The Head of the Sustainable Energy Research Centre Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serkan Abbasoğlu stated that the total cost of the project is 1.5 million euros, and they conducted a serious feasibility study before installing the project and their study has even been published in the “Solar Energy” magazine which is the most esteemed magazine of the solar energy field.
Furthermore, stating that the project has been submitted to the service of the universities in the island through a central monitoring station and it has the feature of a natural laboratory especially for engineering students, Abbasoğlu said that the project has been visited by many authorities from various countries such as Pakistan, US, Iran, Iraq, China and Turkey and it sets an example for many projects.
Adding that 4131 panels have been installed and 350.000 kilowatt hours of the produced energy will be given to the TRNC Energy Transmission Line, Abbasoğlu said that in this way, 200.000 Turkish liras will be contributed to the economy of the island each year.
It was also expressed that this project meets 80% of the energy amount used during the daytime of the International Cyprus University.
