Cyprus History – Cyprus Rock Memorial – Further Update

Cyprus Memorial Rock

Further Update

By Margaret Sheard…..

We have received a further update from David Littlemore on the progress of the Cyprus Rock Memorial and the National Memorial Arboretumunveiling at the National Memorial Arboretum in the UK on Sunday 21st August.

David spent a day at the National Memorial Arboretum and met up with Keith Rackham, the stonemason who was responsible for the Kyrenia Memorial and they discussed the work for the Cyprus Rock which he is now preparing.  They agreed that rather than placing the Roll of Honour inside the rock before it is transported to the NMA, it would be placed in the Rock as part of the ceremony at the unveiling.  What a wonderful idea which we are sure will be so significant for those who lost loved ones and friends during the Cyprus Emergency.

During his time at the Arboretum, David met his new main contact at the Arboretum, Peter Orgill, and they discussed the location of the Cyprus Rock within the Arboretum which is to be in the “Mediterranean” area in keeping with the geographical position of Cyprus in relation to Sicily, Palestine and North Africa.Rock and plinth

There was also a meeting with Emma the Arboretum Events Officer who will be organising the NMA’s part of the unveiling on 21st August.  Seating for 50 has been ordered at the moment and more can be arranged if necessary.   Arrangements which have been made so far for the unveiling ceremony is a piper from the Gordon Highlanders, a Parade Marshall and Chaplain from the RAF, also a number of standards are being brought to parade including the Cyprus UKU Police Roll of Honour banner and the Royal British Legion Kyrenia Branch standard.

Perhaps those who will be attending the unveiling would let David know so that he has a better idea of numbers and can make whatever arrangements are necessary for additional seating if required  –  david.littlemore1@btinternet.com……

The plaque, which has been donated by David Littlemore, Plaquewas sent back to engravers and the wording,”together with the 21 British Policemen” was added after it was agreed to make it a joint memorial.

David has said “We have the promise of £1,000 from a Police charity and  we are getting close to £2,000 from the “gofundme” web site suggested by Margaret of ‘cyprusscene’, with many regimental associations also promising to donate £100 each. We are getting there, and I thank all of you who have so far donated to the Memorial”.

Apart from the costs involved in setting up this wonderful memorial to those who lost their lives in Cyprus between 1955 and 1959 there will be additional funding needed for the future maintenance of the Cyprus Rock Memorial at the Arboretum and the current gofundme account can be used for donations to keep funding going for this purpose so if you would like to make a donation, no matter how much you can spare, please click here
