A second Victory for The Gentlemen of Girne

Another surprising day (with a spectacular view) at the Bellapais ground. For the first match of the Creditwest Autumn cricket league between The Eastern Mediterranean University vs Lefke European University.

The EMU captain Sohail Khilji won the toss and put the LEU team into bat first. It was a very bad start for LEU when their openers Muhammad Adael and Muhammad Shahbaz lost both their wickets in the first two overs and that put LEU under some serious pressure.

The Chairman of  TRNC Cricket Association and Creditwest Autumn cricket League 2016 Organizer Danish Afridi predicted the EMU team would win against LEU easily. But it was Zakir Khan from LEU, who played responsibly and gave an outstanding batting performance scoring 52 runs, with the help of four sixes and four fours. After that the rest of the LEU team gained confidence and contributed their part to the highest total of the Creditwest Autumn cricket league 132 runs, LEU surprised everyone at the ground.

In reply to 132 runs EMU openers Sohail Khilji and Majid Khan came out to bat. It was the third over of the match when Muhammad Bilal took the wicket of Majid Khan for only 2 runs. After that the senior and very experienced batsman Sohail Khilji took responsibility and played a match winning innings of 52 runs with help of five sixes and three fours, a very good innings from Muhammad Omer, who scored 23 runs, with the help of four fours. At the end of the innings EMU were in trouble, when they lost their eight wickets and the match turned once again to the new young LEU team. But experienced Saad and Mayed won the first match for EMU Warriors Creditwest Autumn cricket league 2016.  The match winning key was Captain Sohail Khilji and Muhammad Omer’s batting partnership.

It was the second Match of the Creditwest Autumn Cricket League between Gentlemen of Girne vs The Near East University.

In reply to NEU, Gentlemen’s opening batsmen Janwali Khan and Abdul Waris, came out to address their target and it was the third ball of the match when Janwali Khan was bowled by NEU bowler Raja Sarmad for one run only. The NEU captain Raja Sarmad won the toss and elected to bat first. The two opening batsmen from NEU made a wonderful start, completely destroyed the Gentlemen’s bowling attack and the scoreboard mounted to 65 runs with the loss of no wickets in 5 overs. Gentlemen’s captain Danish Afridi had quickly realized the situation and brought in their star and partnership breaker Shahzad Malik, who once again succeeded in breaking the NEU opening partnership, after which none of NEU batsmen scored significantly and they were all out for 122 runs in 17 overs. Shahzad Malik 4 wickets, Danish Afridi 3 wickets, Anwer Kattak 2 wickets, and Janwali Khan 1 wicket.

At one down, Gentlemen’s commando Bilal Afridi took his stance and continued the battle against NEU and played a match winning innings 45 runs, including four sixes and three fours. Bilal Afridi felt no mercy for any NEU bowlers and rescued the Gentlemen brigade, ten overs 103 runs.

But the drama began towards the end of the innings when Gentlemen needed only 20 runs left, with sun in their eyes, conceded four wickets. It was the last men Shahzad Malik, a very strong hitter, and experienced Muhammad Arif, who were fighting their battle for Gentlemen. It was very hard to see the ball because of the sunset right in the batsmen’s eyes but experienced Shahzad Malik hit a six when there were only ten runs left and plenty of balls and then hit a four in the next over that gave a second victory to Gentlemen of Girne in the Creditwest  Autumn Cricket League 2016.
